Spray foam insulation is often regarded as the best method of insulation for boats, particularly by canal boat owners in London and across the UK. This is largely due to its compact and lightweight nature, along with its thermal insulation and moisture reducing properties.
Boats can be challenging places to insulate, especially when using more traditional methods such as “Rockwool” insulation. With spray foam, it is applied in liquid form and then quickly expands to the required thickness and rapidly sets into a rigid foam. This allows for the forming of a continuous membrane that fills all gaps, eliminating drafts and moisture build up.
Foam insulation also has a very good “U” value. This basically means that 3 times the thickness of “Rockwool” insulation would be required to achieve the same level of insulation as spray foam.
On a boat this is a particularly important property since there isn’t a lot of space to insulate. Typically, we see an average of 30mm battens. With the spray foam, we are able to achieve enough insulation without exceeding this thickness, saving on space and weight. On larger boats, such as Dutch barges, a larger thickness of insulation is likely to be possible.
